Welcome to the Year 5 class blog for 2017.
The children have settled in well and enjoyed the initial superhero topic and the residential to Castleton – an amazing time was had by all.
We are now going to be starting our new topic: ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. This will include:
- how different countries and cultures are represented in stories;
- how journeys are significant to different regions;
- how a journey around the world today would differ from Phileas Fogg’s journey;
- planning their own journey around the world.
In maths, we will be focusing on the four rules of operation: addition, subtraction, multiplication (including learning the method of long multiplication) and division. We will be applying these skills in a range of problem solving activities to develop their understanding. We will also be focusing on time: reading digital times; converting between 12-hour and 24-hour; calculating time durations; and reading and interpreting timetables. It is important that your child already knows how to tell the time using an analogue clock; we would be grateful if you could practise this with your child at home.
Regular practice of multiplication tables and related division facts is vital in order for your child to access the Year 5 maths curriculum. Mathletics will continue to be used to support the work covered at school.
